While most people would try to be professional in writing about how they use new media, I'm going to be to the point. I use new media as social media. I'm all about staying connected to anyone and everyone that i come into contact with.
I recently picked up the iPhone 4 (been a 3g user for 2 years though) and now more than ever I am always on that thing checking in to see what is going on in the world. I am constantly checking in on Twitter to see what college friends are thinking or working on during the day. Facebook is my number one though. I am alwayssssss on Facebook. I prefer this to other social networking sites because absolutely everyone is on it, from my mom to ex boyfriends to professors to people i knew when i was 5. I like having the option of looking through their photos, catching up on what they've been doing and knowing that we have mutual friends. As far as being social goes, you can also see where your friends are located, such as malls or different restaurants. This gives the option of being able to immediately ask what they like or dislike about the places they go, giving you information for the future.
That's the wonderful thing about apps. You can download any type of social media app to keep up with your friends and coworkers. There are apps such as Food Spotting where people check in at various restaurants and take pictures on the app to show everyone what is good. Then there are apps for productivity like InClass, which i can type all of my assignments into for the semester and it tracks my progress, as well as letting me know when things are due.
Another great thing about the iPhone though is the option to talk to someone while looking at their face! In the past, movies and television shows would talk about ideas like this. At that point it was a crazy futuristic thing, but here it is. What next, flying cars?
